A vehicle that once supported your independence can become unsuitable after a change of circumstances affecting your health, home or family. You can ask to end a Motability lease early, but approval and costs depend on your situation and lease agreement.

Before arranging a return, find out what happens to your payments, transport and any refund. Start by separating the Motability Scheme’s published rules from decisions Motability must make about your individual case.

Key takeaways

  • Call Motability on 0300 456 4566 before returning your vehicle or making replacement arrangements.
  • Motability’s published car-return FAQ lists a £250 administration fee (an admin charge). Check whether it applies as a cancellation fee, or whether an allowance-related exemption is available under your agreement and Motability’s decision. Check scooter and powered wheelchair charges separately.
  • Any advance payment refund is calculated proportionately after return, subject to your agreement and Motability’s decision. An early return can affect eligibility for the good condition bonus, formally called the Good Condition Payment.
  • Ask for written confirmation of charges, return arrangements and the date payments will stop.

When can you end your Motability lease early?

Motability considers early-ending requests individually. Its guidance on ending a lease asks customers to discuss changed needs rather than assume cancellation is automatic.

Health changes and unsuitable equipment

Deteriorating health, difficulty transferring or a move to inaccessible accommodation are reasons to explain your situation. However, they don't automatically guarantee approval or a fee waiver.

Describe the practical difficulty. Explain whether you can still sit comfortably, operate the controls or reach essential appointments. If a powered wheelchair no longer meets your needs, mention this. Ask whether an adjustment, repair or different mobility arrangement could help.

Most leases run for three years, although some complex arrangements involving a powered wheelchair last five years. Check your lease agreement and its lease terms and conditions rather than assuming the same term applies to every vehicle.

Allowance changes need separate attention

If your qualifying benefit stops or the mobility component is paid at a lower rate, contact Motability promptly. A change to your benefit award and a lease decision are separate processes, so ask how it affects your mobility allowance.

For Personal Independence Payment, follow the government's PIP change-reporting guidance. Reporting a change to the DWP is separate from contacting Motability, and simply returning a vehicle doesn't tell the DWP about a change in your needs.

Also ask when the mobility allowance previously paid towards your lease will return to you.

How to request early termination

Keep the process manageable by dealing with approval, money and return arrangements in order.

  1. Speak to Motability first. Call 0300 456 4566 with your customer details and explain why your current lease no longer works.
  2. Describe your actual experience. Give relevant dates, repair history or access difficulties. Explain how the problem affects everyday journeys.
  3. Ask about alternatives and evidence. Ask whether a home assessment or another option may help, and what supporting information Motability needs. Don't pay for a medical letter before checking whether one is necessary.
  4. Request a written decision. Ask for the applicable fee, any waiver decision, refund calculation and effect on future Scheme applications.
  5. Confirm the handover. Establish where the vehicle must go, who will arrange transport and when lease payments will stop. For a car, confirm the Scheme-package details for comprehensive insurance and breakdown cover, including whether they apply up to handover.

For cars and wheelchair-accessible vehicles, Motability directs customers where to return the vehicle, usually a supplying or replacement dealer. Its information about leaving the Scheme explains return arrangements.

Scooter and powered wheelchair customers should confirm arrangements with Motability and their supplying dealer. Don't assume home collection follows the same process.

Finally, photograph the vehicle's condition and retain the handover receipt. Ask which keys, charging equipment and accessories must accompany it.

Cancellation fee, refunds and other costs

A clear settlement breakdown helps you compare a cancellation fee with continued use or another solution.

The £250 fee and possible exceptions

Motability's early-return FAQ states a £250 admin charge, described as a cancellation fee. It says this is waived when the lease ends because the mobility allowance stops or changes to a lower rate.

However, don't assume these car-return rules apply to a scooter or powered wheelchair lease agreement. Ask Motability to confirm the charges for your powered wheelchair agreement.

If serious illness or hardship has prompted your request, explain the circumstances and ask for a fee review. The published guidance doesn't guarantee a waiver for those reasons. Request the decision in writing before agreeing to proceed.

What happens to money already paid?

The official FAQ says Motability refunds an advance payment on a pro-rata basis after the vehicle is returned. This means a proportional refund, rather than repayment of the whole amount.

You won't qualify for a Good Condition Payment when ending early. Optional extras and adaptations aren't refunded, and excess mileage may create an additional charge.

Lease payments continue until return. Therefore, ask how any delay between approval and handover affects your final bill.

Keep an advance payment refund separate from your allowance restarting. They are different payments and may arrive at different times.

If a nominated driver misuses or withholds the car

Driver disputes need prompt attention because they can leave you without transport. These rules apply to a Motability car with comprehensive insurance, not to scooter or powered wheelchair insurance arrangements.

Report the problem without confronting the driver

A Motability car must benefit the disabled customer. Only nominated drivers named on its Certificate of Motor Insurance may drive it.

If someone uses it against your wishes or refuses access, tell Motability on 0300 456 4566. Explain where the vehicle is, who has the keys and how the situation affects you.

Ask about reporting suspected misuse, reviewing named drivers and arranging a safe return. Motability doesn't publish a guaranteed recovery timetable for a withheld vehicle.

Avoid attempting to seize the keys or recover the car yourself if that could put you at risk.

Escalate unresolved problems through a complaint

Keep dated records of conversations and explain the outcome you need, such as safe access, a return arrangement or a review of charges.

If discussions with customer service don't resolve the issue, ask Motability to register a formal complaint. Its complaints guidance gives a final-response target of eight weeks.

For eligible complaints, the final response should explain any right to contact the Financial Ombudsman Service. Not every dispute falls within its remit.

If threats or abuse put you in immediate danger, call 999. A lease complaint isn't a substitute for emergency protection.

Check repairs and suitability before cancelling

Ending a lease may be appropriate, but first establish whether the problem concerns the equipment's condition or its suitability.

A servicing assessment can identify faults

If a scooter's battery range drops, brakes poorly or becomes difficult to steer, contact the supplying dealer about a vehicle repair. Report when the problem started and whether it occurs consistently.

A change in battery range can have several causes, so don't assume the equipment is unsuitable before it's checked.

Mobility World's servicing process includes a 74-point inspection, covering batteries and connections, tyres, brakes, steering adjustments and a road test. These checks help distinguish a repair issue from unsuitable equipment.

For a Scheme vehicle, ask the supplying dealer how included servicing and repair support applies. Don't authorise an outside repair expecting automatic reimbursement.

Where repairs take longer than expected, request updates and discuss temporary mobility support before deciding on cancellation.

A home assessment checks everyday use

Motability's Jim Wood, Relations Manager for scooters and powered wheelchairs, emphasises dealer visits that establish the customer's requirements.

During a home assessment, check doorway clearance, turning space, charging access and transfers. A mobility scooter uses tiller steering, whilst a powered wheelchair has different controls and seating arrangements.

Try a powered wheelchair in the spaces you use every day, including doorways and transfer areas. Your first-hand observations matter. Explain where discomfort starts, which thresholds cause difficulty and whether a carer can manage transporting a powered wheelchair.

Test equipment where you will use it. A comfortable showroom demonstration doesn't establish whether it fits your doorway or storage space.

Local support around Harrow and Letchworth

Award-winning dealer Mobility World offers advice through Mobility World Harrow and Mobility World Letchworth. A dealer can help compare a mobility scooter with other equipment and explain your options, but Motability decides whether to approve early termination.

For families within a 10-mile radius of Harrow, including Pinner, Stanmore, Ruislip and Wembley, ask the Harrow branch about showroom demonstrations and home assessment availability. Call 020 3958 4328.

For customers within a 35-mile radius of Letchworth, including Hitchin, Stevenage, Bedford, Cambridge and Milton Keynes, ask the Letchworth branch about assessment and servicing arrangements. A home assessment can help check suitability before you change your arrangements. Call 01462 418478.

Confirm availability for your postcode rather than assuming every visit or service covers the whole radius.

If you're considering Mobility World's mobility scooter and powerchair leasing scheme, compare suitability before choosing another product. A portable mobility scooter may suit car transport, but check its battery range. A powered wheelchair may better address indoor access or seating needs.

Also compare private purchase with leasing. Ownership leaves you responsible for arranging insurance, servicing and repairs, whilst Motability Scheme packages include support. Check whether breakdown cover is included in your own agreement.

Use Contact Us to discuss an assessment or replacement options before your current vehicle goes back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel if my health deteriorates and I no longer need the vehicle?

You can request early termination and explain what has changed. Motability reviews each request, and deteriorating health doesn't automatically mean approval or a fee waiver.

Ask whether supporting medical information would help. Confirm the financial position before agreeing to return the vehicle.

How long does collection take after cancellation?

There isn't a published standard collection deadline for every early-ending request. You may need to return the car to a dealer rather than have it collected.

For scooters and powered wheelchairs, confirm the practical arrangements directly. Get a date and ask whether payments continue until handover.

Can I join again after an earlier cancellation?

Repeated early terminations can affect future Scheme eligibility. However, the guidance doesn't publish an automatic ban after a particular number.

Explain the reasons for previous cancellations and ask Motability to assess your position before ordering another vehicle. Don't assume either acceptance or refusal.

How much benefit award must remain for a scooter or powerchair?

You generally need at least 12 months remaining on your mobility allowance, which must be a qualifying benefit, to start a scooter or powered wheelchair lease. Eligibility requirements depend on current Scheme guidance.

This is an entry requirement, not an early-cancellation rule. Check your individual agreement and speak to Motability if your benefit award changes during an existing lease.

Make the decision with your next journey in mind

Ending your Motability lease early starts with an agreed decision and a clear return plan. Confirm the costs in writing before handing anything back.

Your next mobility arrangement matters just as much as the cancellation. A repair, home assessment or suitable replacement can help protect everyday independence while your circumstances change.
