Your scooter or powerchair might fit your current home perfectly, yet struggle with the doorway at your next address. A Motability address change therefore needs both an administrative update and a practical access check.

The priority is keeping your mobility uninterrupted whilst you move. If you're using the Motability scheme, your allowance provider, Motability and your dealer each need the right information. Don't assume telling one organisation updates everyone else.

Start with the notifications, then check how your equipment will work at the new property.

Key takeaways before you move

Moving house alone doesn't mean you should assume your lease must end. However, changes to your allowance or a move between UK nations can require further action.

Disabled people who rely on their equipment should plan how to keep it available during the move.

Keep these priorities together:

  • If your vehicle is through the Motability scheme, update Motability once you've moved, or when your move is within the next seven days.
  • Tell your allowance provider separately, and give your dealer the new address and moving date.
  • Check entrances, storage, charging and servicing arrangements before moving day.

A postal redirection can catch missed letters, but it doesn't replace notifying these organisations. Keep confirmations somewhere accessible, rather than packing them with paperwork you won't open for weeks.

Your Motability address change checklist

Have your customer reference, new postcode, moving date and current contact details ready. If a relative or carer helps, check what authorisation is needed before they speak on your behalf.

Update Motability at the right time

Motability's guidance on updating your details explains how to report an address change to the Motability scheme. You can update your address through your online account or call 0300 456 4566.

The Scheme advises updating your address after moving, or if you're due to move within seven days. If your completion date is uncertain, prepare your information rather than submitting an address you might not occupy.

Check your telephone number and email address too. Save the confirmation, or note when you called and what the adviser confirmed.

Notify your mobility allowance provider separately

Updating Motability doesn't automatically update the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

If you receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP), GOV.UK says you must report changes to personal details straight away. The PIP enquiry line is 0800 121 4433, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Relay UK users can dial 18001, then that number.

For another qualifying allowance, contact the organisation responsible for your award. Don't assume the PIP telephone number handles every benefit.

Also report any wider change that may affect your claim. A move into a care home, for example, may affect eligibility conditions, so ask the responsible organisation about your circumstances. A change of address alone doesn't automatically affect eligibility.

Tell your dealer and protect your servicing arrangements

Your dealer needs more than a forwarding address. Explain whether the move changes access to your vehicle, your regular journeys or where an engineer can work safely.

Confirm who will support the new address

Give your dealer the full address, moving date and details of any service or repair already booked.

If you're moving farther away, ask whether the same dealer can continue supporting you. Confirm any handover arrangements with the dealer and Motability before cancelling existing appointments.

Mention practical restrictions early. A gated entrance, communal parking area or upstairs flat can affect a visit, even when the postcode looks straightforward.

Ask whether your insurance arrangements need a separate notification, particularly if your storage arrangements change.

Keep maintenance separate from moving costs

Scooter and powered-wheelchair leases include regular servicing and routine repairs. A move under the Motability scheme doesn't by itself mean you need a separate maintenance package. Check with your dealer what your lease covers.

Mobility World's servicing process includes a 74-point inspection, covering batteries and connections, wheels and tyres, brakes, steering adjustments and a road test. These checks assess equipment condition, but don't replace an assessment of your new home.

Before moving, report braking problems, charging faults or unexpected noises to your dealer. An unresolved fault can be harder to manage among boxes and in unfamiliar surroundings.

For any work outside your lease arrangements, ask what's covered before agreeing to a charge.

Check the new home with your current equipment

A scooter user and family member check the front-door route in a bright hallway.

A floor plan can't show every difficulty you'll encounter in daily use. The best assessment combines measurements with your experience of using the equipment.

Test the whole route, not just the doorway

Measure the narrowest entrance, thresholds and turning spaces. Then check the route between storage, the front door and the places you'll use most.

Motability's scooters and powered wheelchairs relations manager, Jim Wood, emphasises understanding customers' needs at home. This matters when a move brings tighter corners or unfamiliar slopes.

During an assessment, explain what works well now and what already causes difficulty. Your observations about transferring, steering or reaching controls help the adviser assess suitability.

If a ramp seems necessary, seek advice about its gradient, load capacity and installation. Don't improvise with loose boards.

Compare suitability before considering replacement

A compact travel scooter may be easier to transport, but its range and ride comfort might not suit your new journeys. A larger outdoor model needs more storage and manoeuvring space.

Powered wheelchairs also differ in turning space, seating support and indoor suitability. Compare these needs rather than choosing by appearance.

You can explore options in Mobility World's Motability scooter and powerchair leasing scheme. However, browsing alternatives doesn't authorise a mid-lease replacement.

If your current equipment no longer suits the property, ask your dealer and Motability about your options under the Motability scheme before placing an order.

Moving day: transport, charging and common mistakes

An older adult on a mobility scooter pauses beside moving boxes outside a home.

Agree transport arrangements with the removal company in advance. Give them the equipment’s weight and dimensions, and explain whether you’ll need it available during the day.

Follow the manufacturer’s transport instructions. Don’t ask relatives to lift a complete scooter without checking its weight and how to handle it safely. For a powered wheelchair, ask your dealer about suitable loading and securing arrangements.

Keep the charger, keys and operating instructions with you. If you rely on the equipment for transfers or essential journeys, plan around that need rather than loading it first.

At your new home, clear the access route before bringing the equipment inside. Check for transport damage and contact your dealer if anything looks wrong.

A storage space isn’t ready simply because the scooter fits. You’ll also need a safe charging position and enough room to get on and off.

Don’t leave equipment in an unsecured garden, charge it across a walkway or block an escape route. Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions and any building rules.

Local support around Harrow and Letchworth

Award-winning dealer Mobility World offers showroom advice, home assessments and aftercare. Ask the team early about Motability scheme support if your move changes how you use your scooter or powerchair.

For Mobility World Harrow, customers moving within a 10-mile radius can ask about support around Pinner, Stanmore, Wembley, Ruislip, Northwood and Edgware. Confirm home-visit availability for your postcode and lease.

For Mobility World Letchworth, discuss moves within a 35-mile radius, including Hitchin, Stevenage, Baldock, Luton, Bedford, St Albans, Cambridge and Milton Keynes. Distance alone doesn't confirm an appointment or servicing arrangement.

Describe the slopes, kerbs, uneven paving, crossings and storage access on your regular routes near Harrow or Letchworth. This helps the team understand your actual surroundings, rather than making assumptions about every town or route.

The Harrow showroom number is 020 3958 4328. For Letchworth, call 01462 418478. Have both addresses ready so the team can discuss the move rather than only the destination.

If travelling to a showroom is difficult, ask about a telephone consultation or an appropriate home assessment. Use Contact Us to explain your moving date, equipment and access concerns before booking.

After the move, check the everyday routine

A carer checks a wall charger beside a parked scooter and its seated user.

Once the boxes are out of the way, try your usual routine at a comfortable pace. Check you can reach the charging point, transfer safely and leave the property without moving furniture.

Then review familiar journeys from your new address. A nearby pharmacy might involve a steep pavement or awkward crossing, so distance alone won’t show whether the route is suitable.

Keep your dealer and breakdown contact details close at hand. If a problem comes up during your first journeys, describe the route, surface and how your equipment behaves when asking for advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Motability address online?

Yes. Motability's online account services let you update your address, telephone number and email address. If you need help or can't use the account, call Motability. Keep a record of the completed update.

Does moving house restart my lease?

A house move alone doesn't automatically reset a lease under the Motability car scheme. Your car lease continues normally while you remain entitled to the qualifying allowance. Don't assume this applies to scooter or powerchair support; check your individual arrangements with your dealer or Motability.

What if I move from England or Wales to Scotland?

If you receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP), contact the PIP enquiry line and make a new claim for Adult Disability Payment. Discuss the allowance transition with Motability too. Other benefits may need separate updates under GOV.UK's change-reporting rules.

Do scooter users need to update DVLA?

Motability advises customers who drive to notify DVLA too. Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs have different rules from cars. If your equipment requires registration, check its address requirements with DVLA; don't assume your Motability update covers them.

Can my family arrange everything for me?

A relative or carer can help prepare information and coordinate appointments. However, organisations may need your consent or recognised authority before discussing your account. Ask about this beforehand so calls don't stall when an adviser needs to speak to you.

Keep your mobility working through the move

A successful move combines accurate records with equipment that works safely in your new home. Notify each organisation separately, confirm servicing support and check access before moving day.

Your experience of using the scooter or powerchair should guide the assessment. Planning transport and charging helps protect your freedom and independence as you settle in, without avoidable interruptions.
